Weddings, Tin year anniversaries & 100 mile charity challenges!

Not long in the door from a trip to Leeds for a family wedding this weekend. It was an Indian wedding of one of Raashi’s cousins and it certainly lived up to the hype: great fun, incredible food, some very questionable dance moves on my part – and yes – a free bar. No complaints from me!

Speaking of weddings, Raashi and I are coming up on a big milestone of our own – tin years married (10 is apparently the ‘tin’ wedding)! It genuinely doesn’t feel that long since I rocked up to our reception on horseback (a three-day celebration, no less). There’s neiigh chance I’ll ever forget the date either as it’s engraved on the inside of my ring, just incase. It’s also tin years since we’ve taken over TWDC, that was a busy time for us back then!

When I googled the 10 year wedding anniversary it suggested a gift of a set of designer storage containers (who needs that?) but apparently “the modern version is a diamond” – of course 🙄. I’ll happily settle for 10 tins of beer.

I’ll have to save them for after our works next charity event though, which is just around the corner. On June the 14th a few of us are taking on a 100 mile cycle to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians – a charity that provides medical aid in Gaza and the West Bank. Like everyone else, we’ve been horrified by the situation there and want to do all we can to help. Our cycle is from Glasgow to Edinburgh and back (104 miles exactly) . If you can, please help us by donating here:

We think it might take us 9-10 hours so the tins will definitely come in handy after that. If you see our staff walking around the practice like John Wayne for a while you’ll know we’ve put a good shift in.

Just before the wedding I was also fortunate enough to visit Bensheim in Germany a couple of weeks ago thanks to an invite from Dentsply Sirona. Our practice is practically a Dentsply Sirona showroom already, so they kindly asked me to visit their European HQ – and it was massive! They’re a big worldwide dental company that basically make everything related to dentistry,: chairs, scanners, all the latest gadgets etc.

There were so many freebies on offer and disappointingly all I managed to blag was a high vis vest. Might come in handy for directing the parking at the practice at least. I’m sure our patients have noticed it gets a bit tight in there, thankfully our friends at Farmfoods next door have kindly lent us some of their spaces too.

Some of the kit we have from Dentsply is in our lab room where we can now mill our own crowns in house, ill leave you with this glowing review from one of our lovely patients Tracey after experiencing it first hand:

Game changer for us and our patients!

Take care all and thanks for reading,

Weekend Adventures & What’s New at the Practice

It’s been a nice, relaxing weekend… for Raashi, anyway — she’s been soaking it up at a spa in Ireland while I’ve been solo parenting three little rockets. The weather hasn’t exactly been on our side, so we’ve ended up watching a fair bit of TV and somehow found ourselves tumbling down a YouTube rabbit hole.

It started with Britain’s Got Talent, moved swiftly onto the US version, then backstage clips, and before I knew it, it was 11pm on a wild Saturday night — the kids and I were knee-deep in mini eggs, watching Simon Cowell’s Top 10 Golden Buzzers of All Time. I’m not saying I got emotional at the golden buzzer moments, but let’s just say I had to tell the kids my hayfever was playing up. How my Saturday nights have changed btw.

I did try to get us out of the house today. The plan was to go swimming, but there was an ‘incident’ at the Allander pool meaning the pool was sh*t — and I’ll let you guess which vowel is missing from that word. So we headed to the Leisuredrome, only to find the roads closed and the leisure centre out of action thanks to a triathlon. Fair play to anyone competing in that – I was tired just driving around for 90 minutes before heading home for.. …. more TV.

I had grand plans to tidy the whole house so that Raashi would think I was an absolute legend of a husband when she gets back later, but she’s just going to have to accept that she married a perfectly bang average bloke (which I’m sure she’s fully aware of already.) We’ve only recently moved back home after some renovation work, and there are boxes everywhere – it’s definitely a two-man job so best waiting for Raashi anyway. And by “two-man job” I mean “one man, one woman”, …I bet that phrase is probably cancelled these days.

At work, we’ve also just moved back into our reception area after a major revamp — and I have to say, it’s looking great. There’s still a bit of snagging to sort, but the new layout is a big upgrade & we’re really proud of it. For our patients the entrance is back around the rear again, with lovely new seating and a complimentary coffee station while you wait. The new surgeries and lab are looking sharp too, and we’ve got some genuinely exciting new tech that’s going to be a real game-changer for us and our patients.

Completely wireless scanning now – in seconds!

We’ll be hosting an open day soon so everyone can come along and check it all out. There’ll be fun activities for the kids, a few freebies on offer, and complimentary consultations for new patients. We’re really looking forward to welcoming you into the new premises. It’ll probably be some time in June so hopefully we get a nice day for it. For one of the nice days we had recently I saw a guy walking around near Bishopbriggs cross not just with his tap aff, but his shoes and socks too. Genuinely couldn’t believe it. Proper just walking around in his bare feet.

You’ll be glad to know we’ll all have our shoes and socks on for your complimentary consultations – look forward to seeing you soon!

Take care all and thanks for reading…

New Year, New Challenges: Cycling, Golf, and More

In my last blog I wrote that I had asked Santa for Manchester United to be less of a shambles. Turns out even Santa has his limits 🤦🏻‍♂️. I’ve come to the conclusion that we just need Fergie back, how old is he anyway?! I was at the game on Thursday night against Rangers, so it was nice to at least win that one. I must say the Rangers fans were loud – fair play; but they were blown away by Bruno Fernandes & storm Eowyn in the end!

Apologies that we had to close on Friday this week as a result of the storm – hopefully everyone managed to keep safe and dry, with little to no damage to their property/belongings. We did what we could to reschedule appointments and added an extra clinic yesterday to see emergencies. It also allowed us to get the slap through to our new extension carried out without too much disruption for patients. Things appear to be progressing nicely on that front, full steam ahead to opening our new surgeries around the start of March!

Speaking of steaming ahead, we’ve nailed down our team charity fundraising challenge for this year: a 100-mile cycle from Glasgow > Edinburgh & back in the mid-June. There will be a prize for the winner and a forfeit for whoever comes last, so I’m getting the training in now & looking forward to my transition to becoming a fully-fledged MAMIL (middle-aged man in lycra)… it’s my time. 🚴‍♂️

I celebrated turning 37 last week and my birthday consisted of a Saturday morning shift at work, attending a march in support of peace in Gaza, and finished off with a round of mini golf with the kids. 37 really is all it’s cracked up to be. Mini golf on paper should have been one of those wholesome fun family activities, but in reality I spent my time constantly stopping the kids from kicking each other’s golf balls, running onto other peoples holes, & hitting each other in the face with their clubs. There was lots of shouting “no, stop, don’t, Jesus Christ & FORE” involved and although we’d planned for 36 holes we called it a day after 18 for everyone’s safety & sanity! I didn’t let them win either. It was my birthday and if they’re going to behave like children they have no chance against the champ. 😏

I guess that’s why they call it ‘crazy golf’

I’m hoping to take the winning streak to Hyrox which I’ll be doing along with a few members of our team in March. It’s an exercise challenge course which does look pretty tough to be fair. The more modest but also more realistic ‘win’ of finishing the challenge, and not finishing last will do for that one.

With January coming to an end I hope everyone is still sticking to your New Years resolutions, I’ve managed to stick to one. I’m reading more! Finished “The Glucose Revolution” and now occasionally eat less sweets. Baby steps. As for the other resolution—reverting to an old Nokia 3210 to cut down on my screen time—I’ve got the phone, just not the SIM card in it yet. One of these days, I’ll either be more present in real life or an absolute legend at Snake.

Finally, if you’ve made a resolution to sort out your smile this year, we’ve got you covered. Our new surgeries will be up and running soon, and some of our dentists will be back from maternity leave before you know it. So if your teeth are still on your to-do list, we’ll be ready when you are!

Take care all and thanks for reading,

Joe
