Taxi Drivers, Robots and a Desperate Need for New Abs

It’s been a little while since I managed a Sunday blog post, over a year to be honest! I used to like doing them and it was great to keep my subscribers up to date with the goings-on at the practice. Both of them have kindly asked me to start again so here goes.

My main stumbling block at the minute is the time commitment on a Sunday. Our kids are all at the parent = taxi driver age now so Raashi and I are constantly shuffling back and forward to all the clubs. I’m looking forward to the tables turning on that, when they become our taxi drivers in a few (8) years.

Although I think back to the times when this handover happened for my mum and those were stressful times for the both of us: “slow down, don’t break so hard, slow down, you’re really close to that kerb, slow down” . I used to tell her she could only continue to be a passenger if she closed her eyes when I was driving. I’ve got 8 years to figure out if I’ll need to borrow her blindfold or not. Surely the cars will all be driving themselves by then anyway?

It’s actually crazy how fast technology is going atm. As a kid, driverless cars were something I thought I would only ever see on ‘The Jetsons’ (what a programme btw, shout out to all the late 80’s kids). But here we are and Mr Musk & co are working on that becoming the norm, taking away yet another job (sorry, taxi drivers). If it’s any consolation, I don’t think you’re alone – there doesn’t seem to be anything AI can’t do atm. The thought of my mum in a driverless car does tickle me right enough…I can just imagine the AI pulling over, getting out and saying “no chance love, you may get a human driver”.

The tech we have at the practice now too is insane. I’ve always been keen to invest in new tech, as it makes our job easier and more enjoyable, but it’s also proving to be much more comfortable and accurate, providing a better result for our patients. We now have the facility to make crowns, bridges, retainers, whitening trays, implant crowns & more; all in house on 3d printers and milling machines. Not only that, all of this can be done on the same day, normally within an hour or 2, while our patients wait. This used to take 2 weeks and involve temporary teeth and multiple appointments.

Thankfully, the machines haven’t made our dental technician colleagues redundant just yet either. We still rely on their skills and expertise massively. If anything, the digital tech has changed how we work together and opened up even more possibilities for what we can achieve.

But who knows, the speed at which it’s all going, maybe these machines will be able to do everything themselves and us dentists, nurses & dental technicians will just have to join the taxi drivers on the dole. Maybe that wouldn’t be so bad, we could spend our days going for nice walks (like the one we managed this morning up Conic hill with the kids) while cursing the Ai that stole our jobs:

A couple standing on a hillside overlooking a scenic lake and mountainous landscape on a clear day.

It dawned on me today that at 6, 7 & 9 years old, my kids have all overtaken me in both fitness and stamina. I genuinely couldn’t keep up with any of them climbing up that hill today. I doubt that pendulum will ever swing back in my favour now! Surely chat gpt can make me some abs?

Hope everyone has a lovely Sunday!

Take care and thanks for reading

Weekend Adventures & What’s New at the Practice

It’s been a nice, relaxing weekend… for Raashi, anyway — she’s been soaking it up at a spa in Ireland while I’ve been solo parenting three little rockets. The weather hasn’t exactly been on our side, so we’ve ended up watching a fair bit of TV and somehow found ourselves tumbling down a YouTube rabbit hole.

It started with Britain’s Got Talent, moved swiftly onto the US version, then backstage clips, and before I knew it, it was 11pm on a wild Saturday night — the kids and I were knee-deep in mini eggs, watching Simon Cowell’s Top 10 Golden Buzzers of All Time. I’m not saying I got emotional at the golden buzzer moments, but let’s just say I had to tell the kids my hayfever was playing up. How my Saturday nights have changed btw.

I did try to get us out of the house today. The plan was to go swimming, but there was an ‘incident’ at the Allander pool meaning the pool was sh*t — and I’ll let you guess which vowel is missing from that word. So we headed to the Leisuredrome, only to find the roads closed and the leisure centre out of action thanks to a triathlon. Fair play to anyone competing in that – I was tired just driving around for 90 minutes before heading home for.. …. more TV.

I had grand plans to tidy the whole house so that Raashi would think I was an absolute legend of a husband when she gets back later, but she’s just going to have to accept that she married a perfectly bang average bloke (which I’m sure she’s fully aware of already.) We’ve only recently moved back home after some renovation work, and there are boxes everywhere – it’s definitely a two-man job so best waiting for Raashi anyway. And by “two-man job” I mean “one man, one woman”, …I bet that phrase is probably cancelled these days.

At work, we’ve also just moved back into our reception area after a major revamp — and I have to say, it’s looking great. There’s still a bit of snagging to sort, but the new layout is a big upgrade & we’re really proud of it. For our patients the entrance is back around the rear again, with lovely new seating and a complimentary coffee station while you wait. The new surgeries and lab are looking sharp too, and we’ve got some genuinely exciting new tech that’s going to be a real game-changer for us and our patients.

Completely wireless scanning now – in seconds!

We’ll be hosting an open day soon so everyone can come along and check it all out. There’ll be fun activities for the kids, a few freebies on offer, and complimentary consultations for new patients. We’re really looking forward to welcoming you into the new premises. It’ll probably be some time in June so hopefully we get a nice day for it. For one of the nice days we had recently I saw a guy walking around near Bishopbriggs cross not just with his tap aff, but his shoes and socks too. Genuinely couldn’t believe it. Proper just walking around in his bare feet.

You’ll be glad to know we’ll all have our shoes and socks on for your complimentary consultations – look forward to seeing you soon!

Take care all and thanks for reading…
