Dentists – Do as we say not as we do!

Saturday night used to be a going out night for Raashi and I.

After a hard week at work it was great to go out with friends and enjoy a few beers or wine.

This weekend I realised just how much times have changed for us when the only ‘going out’ we were interested in was a trip to Asda to buy an emergency supply of chocolate for a sofa dwelling evening ahead!

We’ve just started a new box set, The assassination of Gianni Versace, during which we made a strong dent in the emergency supplies and even managed a glass of wine too -although I nearly fell asleep half way through that. Other young parents or those who have been at this stage of life before will no doubt know the feeling.

I laughed a bit when I realised here we are, two dentists absolutely stuffing our faces with all this chocolate and fizzy drinks  – I wondered what our patients would think.

Before judging us, grab a bag of the dinky deckers and try to eat just one of them!

So, as dentists, when we’re giving out diet advice its a case of do as we say and not as we do – certainly for Raashi and I anyway!

In all seriousness, if you are like us and love chocolate and fizzy drinks, best to limit it to just after meals and use a straw! Snacking constantly on sugary foods or drinks throughout the day is much worse for your teeth. ‘Zero Sugar’ fizzy drinks are better but don’t be fooled into a false sense of oral security – some of them are more acidic than vinegar!

As for kids, my advice is try to avoid giving them any for as long as possible. We don’t deprive our oldest daughter Mila of chocolate completely, but we do our best to limit it. Re fizzy drinks (and fruit shoots!) I would definitely say avoid completely for kids. Mac B water is flavoured and sugar free – if your kids like sweet tasting juice give that a try. Make sure to help them brush their teeth AM & PM too, up until about the age of 7. Mila and I have a battle with the toothbrushing every time but I always make sure I win.

Have a good week everyone

(Ps if by some miracle any of you do manage to eat just one of the dinky deckers please bring in the rest of the bag for us)

Winter warmer Irish stew recipe

So it looks like we might be set for more snow this week coming.

On Wednesday just gone Raashi’s mum slipped on the ice outside our house, fell and broke her wrist. Such a shame for her as it seems like she’s in a lot of pain. Its also so tough to do anything one handed so she’s staying with us while she recovers. Its nice to be able to look after her and let her rest as she’s always done so much for everyone else.

Ive been trying to find someone to re-do our steps at the front of our house as they’re a bit hazardous so if anyone knows someone who can do that please let me know.

When it gets quite cold it usually puts me in the mood to make a big pot of Irish stew, which I think ill do this week.

Its my Granda’s recipe and I absolutely love it. Now Im no Gordon Ramsay so it suits my style of cooking as its pretty much throw it all into the pot and wait. If anybody is interested in giving it a go here it is: (ps I don’t bother weighing anything I just throw it all in!)

  1. Minced beef into the pot
  2. Cut up some sausages and throw them in too (I prefer beef sausages)
  3. Cover the meat with boiling water
  4. Salt and pepper
  5. Throw in a chopped onion
  6. Carrots in
  7. Garlic, chilli and mixed herbs in.
  8. Add a couple of beef oxo cubes into the mix
  9. Curry Powder in there (this is the key ingredient!)
  10. Peel and chop the potatoes in half then pile them up to the top of the pot. Don’t worry that theres no water covering them.
  11. Leave that on a low heat for ages.
  12. At the end if its thick enough your good to go, if its quite watery just add some thick beef gravy to the mix.

Have that with a bit of nice bread for a dipper! For some reason its always better the next day too.

The photo doesn’t look that appealing but trust me its delicious!

Careful on the Ice and have a good week everyone!

31 years young!

Its been a good week finishing up my paternity leave and ‘celebrating’ turning 31 on Friday.

My family are also over from Ireland so its been great having everyone about. My mum has even managed to tidy the house, make dinners, babysit and walk our dog Fergie (named after the greatest manager of all time.)

Back to work tomorrow which Im looking forward to.  We just had a new computer system installed while I was off and its going to be a great improvement for our practice. We’re bound to have teething issues with it though (no pun intended) so I appreciate everyones patience and understanding in the short term.

In the spirit of new babies our monthly competition is to have a guess at pairing our staffs current photos with their baby photos, there is a £1 entry fee with all proceeds going to Marie Curie. For those who read this I will offer a clue that I am not the little girl with the black fringe despite some previous guesses 😉

We’ve decided to partner with Marie Curie in Balornock for the year and will be running more fundraisers and volunteering throughout 2019. Did you know it costs £20,000 to run Marie Curie Hospice per day, with only £9000 in gov funding coming in!

We’ll do our bit to help and appreciate everyones contributions so far! The generosity from our patients at Christmas time for the food bank donations was overwhelming – thank you all so much for this.

Also, I noticed the ’10 year challenge’ on FB this week and found a few beauties of myself and Raashi from back then.

10 years on were plus 2 and a Dog. And minus that shirt and necklace! What a journey its been, heres to the next 10!

Have a good week everyone,

Joe
