Turkey Time 😎🇹🇷

This week we’ve been on holiday to Turkey with Raashi’s parents, brother Manas and his wife Kirsty. Tonight’s our last night and I’m looking forward to the entertainment on show which has been amazing every night. The resort we’re in is all inclusive and we have definitely made the most of it. I don’t normally eat breakfast at home, maybe a piece of fruit on the way to work, but I reckon next week I’ll definitely miss having my main course, then fruit, then dessert every morning.

Thankfully we’ve actually managed to find time to exercise too though, Raashi has been doing water aerobic classes and I’ve been going for runs around the resort. To be honest it probably only adds up to around 30 minutes of exercise each but it’s a start and we’re hoping we can keep the momentum going when we get back home. 😄

Tomorrow being the last day I’ll be shade-bathing as much as possible as in typical Irish fashion I am part beetroot red despite factor 50’ing it for the whole week. It was a moment of real sadness when I realised I was sunburnt on my bald spot after the first day and have had to take precautions since.

I’ll have to have one last go on the slides as they’re great fun and our daughter Mila loves them too. There’s one that’s actually quite high and as I queued up with Mila (2) and noticed the sign saying 10+  I looked at her and thought to myself “I’ll say she’s nearly 10 as they probably won’t believe 10″. Although my speech was ready, the guy just waved us on and she loved it!

Overall I’ve been really impressed with the customer service and attention to detail from  the staff. They all make such an effort, especially with the kids, and are even great at remembering our names. As much as the hotel itself is amazing and the weather has been great, it’s the staff / customer service that makes all the difference!

We are well aware of this at our own workplace, which is why we are always looking to better our service in any way we can. That being said, your feedback is really important to us so if there’s anything you think we can improve on please let us know!

Have a good week everyone,

Joe

Backstreets back!

Its been an eventful weekend for us starting with the Backstreet Boys concert on Friday night at the Hydro. A couple of our best friends had 2 spare tickets and kindly offered them to us for free! Initially I thought ‘well I probably wouldn’t pay for them but if they’re free sure why not!’ In hindsight I couldn’t have been more wrong.

The gradual progression of appreciation was remarkable. At first I was just smiling and enjoying the beers and free tickets, firmly in the denial stage of ‘not actually a backstreet boys fan’. Next I was nodding along thinking the dance moves were quite impressive, the ‘surprised’ stage.  The realisation that some of the tunes were absolutely banging brought me to the confusion stage, and finally I realised I was in acceptance when I was standing up belting out ‘one more tune’ (by myself) at the end! Since then I’ve had backstreet boys on in the kitchen non stop and Im seriously contemplating ordering my ‘Backstreets back – alright!’  T-shirt online. Next time ill be pre-ordering the concert tickets.

Yesterday it was Raashi’s birthday too so we celebrated by taking the girls to see Aladdin in the cinema. Will Smith as the genie was very good and I’m sure Robin Williams would have been proud of his effort!

Today being fathers day I’ve enjoyed a lie in until 10am. Mila made me a nice hand painted card at nursery and both girls Mila and Sienna (Raashi) bought me a donation gift of 3 footballs to a Unicef refugee camp which I thought was a lovely idea.

Im excited to start packing later as we’re off on holiday tomorrow for a week to Turkey. It’s all inclusive so diet will likely be breakfast, then pizza, then lunch most days. My aim is to exercise at least once or twice when im out there, we’ll see how that goes 😕.

Work is in good hands with our amazing staff. We set ourselves a target recently of reaching  100 google reviews and 100 Facebook recommendations by the end of June. We’ve smashed the google target and now sit at 103 reviews, with an overall 5.0 rating.

For Facebook we’ve got 10 to go to reach our goal, so if your happy with the service and care received from us ‘quit playin’ games with my heart’ and help us get there 😁

Have a good week everyone,

Joe

Spice up your life!

Last night the spice girls were in town and Raashi and a few friends made the journey to Edinburgh to see them, ‘zig a zig ahh’ t-shirts on and all. As we weren’t big spice girl fans, this meant it was a daddy day care day for myself and a couple of friends. We thought it would be nice to all meet up for dinner out, just the 3 husbands, 3 kids, and 3 dogs…..but what a disaster that was.

First of all, how difficult is it to park prams inside? We had one double pram and one single to manoeuvre around our table, somehow we managed it after bumping into at least half of the other diners, handing out our ‘sorrys/excuse me’s’ as we went. Then it was the dogs turn. Leads tied to table legs, poured their water into a  bowl and gave out treats which they all fought and barked over, then spilt all the water. It wasn’t the best of starts to say the least.

We were all hungry and had made it this far though so we stuck it out. While waiting for food we managed to distract my oldest daughter Mila with The Lion King on my phone. (We do try to limit Mila’s screen time but sometimes Netflix is a godsend! What did mums and dads do before technology btw!?)

When the food finally came the dogs went a bit mad again, a drink was spilt all over the pizza and 1 dog even managed to climb front paws up to the table and steal a whole slice. At this point we had 2/3 kids screaming on the outside, hungry and desperately needing nappies changed. We also had 3/3 adults staring at each other crying on the inside, wishing we were at the Spice Girls.

We left shortly after and promised each other that when the mums are away next time we would have a night in, order a pizza from Dominoes and let the dogs out in the garden when it comes!

At work we cant quite let pets into the practice but we are proudly child friendly and would encourage all parents to register their young children as soon as possible. Some parents ask us if its ok that their child will be with them during their appointments. Being a parent of young children myself I fully understand the difficulties with arranging childcare so we are always understanding with this. Our staff are absolutely great with children, and we have things around the practice to help occupy them, e.g. lots of childrens books in the waiting room, our toy toothbrush and mouth sets to play with, ‘wheres wally’ posters to get immersed in, and our wifi is complimentary too so please just ask us for the password if you would like to use it!

VR Goggles

I’ve been avoiding internet as much as possible today as I’ve been trying to pretend that Liverpool didn’t actually win the champions league last night. As a Manchester United fan I think the best we can do right now is continue to pretend it didn’t happen and that Fergie is still in charge. All is ok.😕🤷🏻‍♂️

On another note its June already – how did that happen!?

Raashi and I had a look at our new years resolutions list last night for a half way check to see how we are doing. We printed a list and left it on our fridge as a constant friendly reminder. Sadly, not one of them has been accomplished yet. Im hoping for a miraculous come back in the second half of the year.

Im also looking forward to booking another trip back to Ireland to visit my parents caravan again, which was so relaxing last week. When I was back last time I managed to get a go on my brother Joshua’s ‘VR game’. It’s basically virtual reality goggles and headphones and you can go completely somewhere else! Come to think of it I could really do with my own set until this Liverpool thing blows over.

Here I am standing on the edge of a skyscraper in his batman game, not great if your scared of heights (which I am) but I cheated and put my toe further forward to remind myself where I actually was!

IMG_8269

We don’t quite have the VR set up at work but we’ve got something similar in our video goggles. They’re great for longer treatments or for anxious patients to help take your mind off what’s going on. We’ve also just invested in noise cancelling headphones which can pair up with your own phone to listen to your own music during treatment!

We pride ourselves on our treatment of nervous patients and the feedback we get from our goggles is amazing. If it’s something you think you could benefit from please just ask us, films include ‘Manchester United’s treble winning season of 1999’ and ‘The Sir Alex Years’.

Have a good week everyone,

Joe

A Seaweed Bonanza

Spent this bank holiday weekend back in Ireland at my parents caravan just outside Newcastle, County Down. We decided to take the boat back this time so we could take our wee dog Fergie with us. The boat was a lot smaller than I remember from my Uni days, yet it still seems to take the same ridiculous amount of trucks. There must have been at least 50, plus 100 odd cars and hundreds more people, …im still baffled as to how it actually floats.

Somehow we made it safely across on Friday evening and headed straight for the caravan. There may have been 1 small pit stop for some Rockshore (delicious Irish Lager) on the way.

We met up with our friends Claire, Jez and their son Jack on Saturday. Jack and our daughter Mila are great friends so it was nice for them to have fun together eating their weight in ice cream and running around. Randomly Jez had booked the both of us in for a seaweed bath for an hour on the Saturday. Initially I thought it was a joke but it turns out it was actually real so I was glad I brought my swimming shorts and some emergency Rockshore just incase. What was more surprising was how busy the place was, they had a lot of baths and it was basically 1 in 1 out! I should point out the seaweed and water were replenished after each bath.

The staff told me it may be good for hair growth so with my balding on top I had no choice but to jump in and try it.  Pre sea weed bath there was the optional ‘steam room’ or ‘steam box’. It’s hard to explain what it was so I think it really needs the photo:

IMG_4180

Despite laughing at how random it was for the first 30 minutes, the second half was actually pretty nice. Jez even took a ‘seaweed takeaway’ to try at home. I can’t say it did much for the hair but my skin felt good afterwards.

IMG_4230

I used up the rest of my annual seaweed quota with some lovely walks along the beach, all in making it a very relaxing weekend.

Im feeling re-energised and looking forward to getting back to work where we have our new dentist Kamal starting full time this week. He’s very down to earth and im sure all our patients will get along very well with him!

See(weed) you all soon,

A win for TWDC at The Open (wide)

Had a very nice weekend kicking things off with a meal at Castle Terrace in Edinburgh on Friday night with Raashi.

Raashi got some vouchers for her 30th last year and we just managed to get to use them before they expired. The food was absolutely amazing. It was a tasting menu with a wine package so each course was a mini surprise with a pairing glass of wine. They even had a ‘sommelier’ who described the wines to us in great detail as he brought them over. I felt a bit bad for him as he spent a good 2-3 minutes describing every detail of the wine, the whole journey from the grape to the glass, clearly having researched and memorised it very well. Raashi and I are unfortunately not connoisseurs  though,  so he could have saved a lot of time by just summarising it into ‘this ones red, that ones white.’

After work on Saturday morning we chilled in the afternoon before going to the other end of the culinary spectrum with a Chinese takeaway for dinner. Castle Terrace definitely deserve their Michelin star for the tiny plates of deliciousness but if I could chose my last meal, every single time it would be a chicken curry with fried rice, salt and chilli chips, salt and chilli chicken & chow mien all crammed into 1 giant prawn cracker accompanied with the best paired wine, chateaux de diet iron bru.

After an early night on Saturday I was fresh for a round of golf this morning, teaming up with our dentist Laura against our colleagues and friends Samad and Paul from Carntyne and Tollcross Dental. I hit the jackpot with the team mate as Laura has previously represented Ireland playing golf, so safe to say she’s not bad at all! It was helpful to get some feedback on my golf skills and very nice of her to carry me through the round to a victory for TWDC. I think ill return the favour for our next round and just carry Laura’s clubs.

Speaking of feedback, at work we’re nearing 100 reviews on google now. A massive thank you to our patients for that as it really helps us to improve the service that we offer when we know what were doing well or where we can do better! Looking forward to celebrating a night with our staff when we reach 100!

Have a great week everyone,

Joe

‘What’s the craic?’

Had a very busy day today back in Ireland to celebrate our youngest daughter Sienna’s christening.

It’s been great to be home again and make the most of my parents babysitting and catering services – 5*’s from me would highly recommend!

Enjoyed spending some time with my younger brothers Jordan and Nathan Too, before they both set off for Australia for the next year or so!

It was also good to see the whole family today and watch some of them try to teach my oldest daughter Mila how to say ‘what’s the craic?’

We all enjoyed a meal out before coming back home to my parents house for home made pizza courtesy of my auntie Jaqueline. I genuinely thought I was full but before I knew it I was 1 wedge of cake, 4 chicken balls, two slices of pizza and a chocolate strawberry/marshmallow stick deep. I may have also had a few crisps 🤦🏻‍♂️

Mila even managed to find herself a fruit shoot at the party too. I should point out when they say ‘no added sugar’ they mean ‘after the initial bucket of sugar there was no added sugar’

The latter just doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.

Back onto healthy eating and exercise tomorrow for all of us! 😳

Have a good week everyone,

Joe

Summer is Coming..?

Its nice to wake up to a bank holiday Monday this morning. Although how did it get to May already?! Hopefully ‘Summer is coming!’

Last week I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Edinburgh at a dental implant congress. It was basically a series of lectures from some of the best international speakers in implant dentistry, along with an exhibition from the implant companies showing off their latest equipment/gadgets. As a true geek it was very good to be there and learn from some of the best in the world, of course the free bar on the Thursday night wasn’t too bad either. IMG_4043.PNG

I had the opportunity to sample some of the intra-oral scanners at the exhibition, these are basically used so that we don’t need to take ‘impressions’ of your mouth any more. None of that gooey material going down the back of the throat, instead a very small camera takes a scan of the teeth and we can use this to plan treatment or make crowns, invisible braces, veneers and implant teeth! Our practice is committed to using technology to our advantage where possible, for example we recently invested in new wireless signature pads for treatment plans, medical histories etc. to help us get one step closer to being completely paper free. An intra-oral scanner will definitely be our next step towards improvement. Not only is it a lot more comfortable for our patients, and more environmentally friendly by decreasing our use of plastics,  but it’s more accurate too – giving us a better standard of treatment! Its an absolute no brainer and I cant wait to invest!

…Although for any dental reps who are reading this then i’m not that keen and it will need to be a very good deal if we’re to go for it 😉

The rest of the day for us involves some DIY about the house, a dog walk, and when its nap o’clock for the girls Raashi and I will probably try and squeeze in last nights episode of Game of Thrones!

Enjoy the rest of the bank holiday everyone,

Joe

Bring back button-ups!

Had  a week off the blog last week as it was Easter and I was also suffering with a severe dose of man flu, thankfully all recovered now.

I spent Easter Saturday at Gleneagles golfing with friends as part of a friends birthday gift. It was stunning, such a beautiful course, great service, weather was perfect and to top it all off we had some nice cold beers on the buggy.  The golfing ability on show was absolutely bang average at best but even that was more than I was hoping for. Sunday and Monday were spent chilling in the sunshine and we had the first BBQ of the year at a Friends house. Which reminds me, if anyone knows where I can get some BBQ gas canisters please let me know.

Its not as ‘taps aff’ this weekend so I think we’ve got some shopping for new kids shoes on the cards today. We’ll be hunting for a bargain but recently some of the girls at work have been telling me that people are now spending £600+ on trainers these days! Its crazy how fashion desires change among the generations. In my early adolescent days you would be completely on point (or on fleek as its now known) with a pair of £35 Adidas button up track suit bottoms. I was ridiculed for my Umbro ones but at least they didn’t actually unbutton all the way up – so I had the last laugh when there was an un-buttoning attack. Raashi tells me she had a pair of Kappa ones, although in my neck of the woods that was known as Krappa.

Im glad I missed out on the extortionate shoe trend and i’m hoping that by the time my girls are older its gone full circle and I can hoke out the old button ups for another run. Hopefully by then Kappa will even be cool, if it will be cool to say cool that is.

Dentistry can have its own trends too. Certain treatments will come and go in popularity but at the core is a good trusting relationship with your dental practice and staff. We’re all about building long term trusting relationships and getting to know our patients so that we can help provide the right treatment for you at the right time, despite any trends.

To make the most of our Sunday we’ll be bringing the rest of our older clothes to a charity shop later, and keeping one eye out for any spare button ups while were there!

Spoilt for choice!

Writing this one from Duchally, a place near Auchterarder, about a hour or so north of Glasgow.

Raashi and I left on Friday evening, car jam packed with nappies, groceries and 2 kids! It’s a resort with self catering lodges on site and access to a pool, sauna/jacuzzi/steam (and a bar ;-)) The scenery around is absolutely brilliant too. Scotland is such a beautiful country.

We’re away with a group of friends and all the kids, who all seem to be having a great time. Especially our oldest daughter Mila who now has friends to play with who are her own age, rather than playing with her usual best friend Fergie, our dog. Incidentally that would be my only criticism of Duchally, that it’s not dog friendly as wee Fergs would absolutely love this place! Other than that its defnitely 5*****’s from me. It’s quite close to Gleneagles golf course, and im looking forward to coming back up next week for a round of golf there that we booked almost 5 months ago! Id say im safely in the top ten worst golfers in Scotland so im excited to play at such a stunning course but worried that I’ll be barred from coming back after my performance. Thankfully my friends in my group are also in the very same top ten (higher positions than me I might add) so at least ill not be alone.

Back in Glasgow you may have noticed we just welcomed a new dentist to our team, Kamal. He doesn’t start full time until the end of May but until then he is working Fridays and some Wednesdays.

He’s so easy to talk to and very down to earth so Im confident he’ll get fit right in and that all our patients will get along well with him!

So ,(1) if your looking for a nice place to visit for a relaxing weekend away with the family and friends then Duchally gets my recommendation! And (2) if your looking for a dentist we’ve now got 5 in myself, Laura, Raashi, Mr Chan and Kamal, spoilt for choice!
